The Institute for Palestine Studies, in partnership with several research centers in the region, Europe and North America have announced the theme of its annual conference titled “Reassessing the British Mandate in Palestine”, 31 October – 2 November 2022, with the participation of more than 77 researchers, historians and academics.
The IPS choose this theme for its annual conference as for what the British Mandate (1922-1948) represents over a quarter-century in the modern history of Palestine during which the groundwork was laid for the usurpation of Palestinian political rights and the establishment of a Zionist state. It was also a period of vibrant Palestinian mobilization, which was already in motion during the late Ottoman era, and through the mandate, reaching its height during the rebellion of 1936-1939—across cities and the countryside—to respond to newly emerging realities.
It is this vibrancy that the conference seeks to explore. Beyond treating the Mandate as a legal and political system, the conference revisits the social, legal, cultural, economic, and political history of Palestine and Palestinians during the Mandate period. It brings together scholars from Chile to Palestine and beyond, working on a wide array of disciplines and topics.
The conference is jointly sponsored by the following institutions: Birzeit University; Council for British Research in the Levant; New Directions in Palestine Studies, Brown University; Center for Palestine Studies, Columbia University; Hearing Palestine, University of Toronto; European Centre for Palestine Studies, University of Exeter; Centre for Palestine Studies, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.
Over the course of three days, 17 sessions will be held, with the participation of prominent researchers, archeologists, historians, and other academics. The sessions take the following titles: The Mandate in Historical Context, Archaeology and the Subaltern during the British Mandate, Branding the Mandate: Visual Culture at the Service of Empire, Excavating the Past: Archaeological Institutions during the Mandate, Keynote I: The Mandate Period as Rupture: How to Read Archives?, Problematics of Social Fabric: Biography and History, Saints, Theatre and Railways: Reframing Palestinian Cultural History, The 1936 Revolt Revisited, Reformulating Discourse: Education, Crafts, and Pedagogy, Palestine's Coercive Apparatus, Political Economy and Social Movements, The Politics of Autonomy Schemes, Colonialism & Settler Colonialism I, Colonialism & Settler Colonialism II, Mandate Palestine and the Contemporary Memory Debate in Germany, The Ongoing Politics of Palestinian Disenfranchisement, Keynote II: Reading in Time: Reflections on the Question of Palestine.
The conference this year will be held in person at Birzeit University with simultaneous sessions in two locations: The Institute of Law Annex Building, Hall 243, and Said Khoury Building for Development Studies, Hall 104—as well as virtually through Zoom. The conference will convene in Arabic and English, with simultaneous interpretation available.
أعلنت مؤسسة الدراسات الفلسطينية، بالشراكة مع مجموعة من المراكز البحثية في فلسطين والعالم، إطلاق مؤتمرها السنوي تحت عنوان "مراجعة الانتداب البريطاني على فلسطين"، والذي سيُعقد يوم الاثنين 31 تشرين الأول/أكتوبر، ويستمر ثلاثة أيام حتى يوم الأربعاء 2 تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر2022، بمشاركة أكثر من 77 من الباحثين والأكاديميين والمؤرخين من فلسطين والعالم.
ويتناول المؤتمر الانتداب البريطاني (1922-1948) الذي يمثل أكثر من ربع قرن في تاريخ فلسطين الحديث، تم خلاله إرساء الأساس لانتزاع الحقوق السياسية الفلسطينية وإقامة دولة صهيونية. وهي فترة من التعبئة الفلسطينية النابضة بالحياة، والتي بدأت في أواخر العهد العثماني، واستمرت خلال الانتداب، حتى وصلت إلى ذروتها خلال ثورة 1936-1939 في المدن والريف الفلسطيني، رداً على الحقائق الجديدة المفروضة على الأرض.
ويسعى المؤتمر لاستكشاف هذه القضايا الحيوية، كما يعيد النظر في التاريخ الاجتماعي والقانوني والثقافي والاقتصادي والسياسي لفلسطين والفلسطينيين خلال فترة الانتداب، إلى جانب التعامل مع الانتداب كنظام قانوني وسياسي. ويجمع باحثين يعملون على مجموعة واسعة من المجالات والموضوعات من جغرافيات تمتد من تشيلي إلى فلسطين وأماكن أُخرى في العالم.
يُعقد المؤتمر بالشراكة مع المؤسسات التالية: جامعة بيرزيت؛ مجلس الأبحاث البريطانية في بلاد الشام؛ مركز الاتجاهات الجديدة في الدراسات الفلسطينية في جامعة براون؛ مركز الدراسات الفلسطينية في جامعة كولومبيا؛ هيرينغ بالستيان في جامعة تورنتو؛ المركز الأوروبي للدراسات الفلسطينية، جامعة إكستر؛ مركز الدراسات الفلسطينية في معهد الدراسات الشرقية والأفريقية، جامعة لندن.
وعلى مدى ثلاثة أيام، سيتم تنظيم 17 جلسة، تشارك فيها مجموعة من الباحثين والأكاديميين، والمؤرخين، وتأخذ الجلسات العناوين التالية: الانتداب البريطاني: السياق التاريخي، وعلم الآثار والتابع خلال الانتداب، وتسويق الانتداب: الثقافة البصرية والاستعمار، والتنقيب عن الماضي: المؤسسات الأركيولوجية في فلسطين الانتدابية، ومنظومة الانتداب كفترة انقطاع: كيف نقرأ أرشيف الأراضي؟ والسيرة والتاريخ: إشكاليات النسيج الاجتماعي، والأولياء والمسرح وسكة الحديد: إعادة تأطير التاريخ الثقافي الفلسطيني، وقراءات في ثورة 1936، وإعادة تشكيل الخطاب: التعليم والتربية والفنون، وأساليب السيطرة البريطانية، واقتصاد سياسي وحراكات اجتماعية، ومشاريع الحكم الذاتي، والاستعمار والاستعمار الاستيطاني 1، والاستعمار والاستعمار الاستيطاني 2، والانتداب والسجالات حول الذاكرة المعاصرة في ألمانيا، والانتداب الاستعماري في الحاضر: سياسات حرمان الفلسطينيين واستمرارها، ويُختتم المؤتمر بقراءات في الوقت: تأملات في القضية الفلسطينية.
يُعقد المؤتمر، وجاهياً، في جامعة بيرزيت، ورقمياً، على منصة زوم على شكل جلسات متوازية في الوقت نفسه، في قاعتين هما: ملحق معهد الحقوق، القاعة رقم 243، وفي مبنى سعيد خوري لدراسات التنمية، القاعة رقم 104، باللغتين العربية والإنكليزية وتتوفر الترجمة الفورية.
